GTA 6 Grassrivers: Leonida's Everglades Explained
West of Vice City the roads thin out, the water rises, and Leonida turns primal. Grassrivers is GTA 6’s Everglades — an endless sawgrass wetland where the wildlife has teeth and the residents chose invisibility. It might be the most atmospheric region Rockstar has ever teased. Here’s what’s confirmed.
What Rockstar has shown
Trailer 1 gave Grassrivers its stars: airboats screaming across the sawgrass and alligators that very much own the water — including one strolling into a convenience store. Official wetland artwork adds flamingo flats and backwater shacks on stilts. All of it is pinned on our interactive Leonida map.
The anti-city
Every Rockstar map has a wilderness that exists to contrast the city — GTA 5 had Blaine County’s desert. Grassrivers is that role player, but wetter and stranger: instead of meth-country desert, it’s swamp country where the frontier never closed. Rockstar’s official line — people who don’t want to be found — tells you exactly what kind of missions to expect out here.
Wildlife as a game mechanic
Gators aren’t set dressing; trailer footage shows them in the world, in the water and occasionally in retail. Expect wildlife to be an environmental hazard the way cougars were in RDR2 — ambient danger that makes the map feel alive. (Rockstar hasn’t detailed hunting or animal systems yet — that’s expectation, not confirmation.)
What we expect (not confirmed)
- Airboat as a vehicle class — shown in trailers, mechanics undetailed
- Off-grid economy missions — smuggling routes through water nobody patrols
- Weather that matters — a wetland begs for storms and flooding; Leonida is hurricane country
FAQ
Is Grassrivers based on the Everglades? Unmistakably — sawgrass, airboats, gators, stilt shacks. It’s the Everglades with the serial numbers barely filed off.
Can you drive normal cars through Grassrivers? Highways cross the region (our map shows the cross-state route), but the deep wetland is clearly boat territory.
Is this where the swamp gator scene from Trailer 1 happens? The gator-in-the-store scene is Leonida’s energy in one shot — Rockstar hasn’t pinned its exact location, but Grassrivers is where gator country lives.
How does Grassrivers compare to GTA 5’s countryside? See our full GTA 6 vs GTA 5 map comparison — short version: it replaces desert with swamp, and it’s part of why Leonida feels like a state, not a city with a backyard.
