GTA 6 Map vs GTA 5: How Much Bigger Is Leonida?

The single most-asked question about GTA 6’s world: how much bigger is Leonida than GTA 5’s Los Santos? For three years the only answer was fan measurement. That changed the week of the Extended Look — Rockstar developers gave press and creators their own comparisons for the first time.

The short answer: roughly 2× GTA 5, and Vice City alone is roughly 2× Los Santos.

What Rockstar actually said

During studio previews around the August 27 Extended Look, Rockstar North developers gave three ratios:

  • The full Leonida map is about twice the size of GTA 5’s map
  • It is about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map
  • Vice City on its own is about twice the size of Los Santos

That is the closest thing to an official number that exists. Note what it still isn’t: Rockstar has never published a square-kilometre figure — not for GTA 6, not for GTA 5, not for Red Dead 2. These are ratios given verbally in previews, not a measured spec sheet.

MAP SIZE — RELATIVE LANDMASS GTA IV ≈0.3× GTA 5 San Andreas ≈0.8× GTA 5 GTA 5 1× (baseline) RDR2 ≈1× GTA 5 (fan-measured) GTA 6 — Leonida ≈2× GTA 5 (Rockstar) Fan-made graphic by CoastLoot · squares scaled by area · Rockstar has never published km² figures for any of these games

The number that doesn’t quite add up

Put Rockstar’s two comparisons side by side and they imply something odd. If Leonida is 2× GTA 5 and 3× Red Dead 2, then Red Dead 2 must be about two-thirds the size of GTA 5.

Years of community measurement say those two maps are close to parity — Red Dead 2 is usually pegged at roughly GTA 5’s landmass, sometimes slightly larger. So one of these is true:

  • Rockstar is measuring playable land, and Red Dead 2’s mountains and unreachable terrain don’t count
  • Rockstar is measuring something other than area — traversal time, or content density
  • The ratios are rounded conversational figures, not survey data

We don’t know which, and Rockstar hasn’t clarified. It is worth knowing before you quote “2×” as gospel.

It’s not just bigger — it’s built differently

GTA 5 is one city (Los Santos) plus one rural county. Leonida is a whole state with six officially named regions, each with its own identity:

  • Vice City — the neon metropolis, Rockstar’s Miami, and on its own about twice Los Santos
  • Leonida Keys — a tropical island chain with an open-water causeway
  • Grassrivers — everglades wetlands, airboats and gators
  • Ambrosia — refinery-and-freight industrial country
  • Port Gellhorn — a faded gulf-coast port town
  • Mount Kalaga — forested national-park highlands

That structure matters more than raw square kilometres: GTA 5’s map funneled everything back to one city, while Leonida spreads distinct destinations across the state — closer to how RDR2’s regions each felt like different games.

The Extended Look also backed this up on density rather than size: Rockstar says the game carries over 600,000 unique NPC animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5. That is the number that will decide whether the map feels alive, and it’s a better predictor than acreage.

What we still don’t know

  • A real size figure — Rockstar gave ratios, not square kilometres, and may never give more
  • How much is water — the Keys and coastlines could make ocean a large share of the play space
  • How the ratios were measured — see the discrepancy above
  • Whether the map expands post-launch — GTA Online grew for a decade

FAQ

Is the GTA 6 map officially 2x bigger than GTA 5? That is Rockstar’s own comparison, given to press during previews in August 2026. It is not a published measurement, and Rockstar has never released square-kilometre figures for any of its maps.

Is GTA 6’s map the biggest Rockstar map ever? Yes, by Rockstar’s own framing — comfortably ahead of both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

How big is Vice City compared to Los Santos? About twice the size, per Rockstar. Los Santos was the largest city Rockstar had built before this.

Why do Rockstar’s GTA 6 map comparisons contradict fan measurements of RDR2? Because 2× GTA 5 and 3× Red Dead 2 together imply Red Dead 2 is smaller than GTA 5, which fan measurements generally dispute. Rockstar may be counting playable land rather than total terrain. It hasn’t said.

Is the whole map available from the start? Rockstar hasn’t detailed any region-locking. GTA 5 opened its full map immediately; GTA 6 is expected to do the same, but it’s unconfirmed.
