GTA 6 Extended Look: Everything Revealed in the 26-Minute Gameplay Reveal

It aired. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix at 3:00 PM ET on Thursday, August 27, 2026, and landed free on Rockstar’s YouTube channel six hours later. It runs 26 minutes and 49 seconds, and it is the first time Rockstar has ever shown GTA 6 gameplay — captured in-game on a PlayStation 5.

Here is everything it revealed, plus the numbers Rockstar handed to press and creators the same week.

The full presentation is on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI site — no Netflix subscription, no signup. Rockstar also put a direct 4K download on the GTA VI website.

One honest caveat on the map figures: Rockstar has still never published a square-kilometre number, and the two comparisons it did give don’t quite line up with community measurements. If Leonida is 2× GTA 5 and 3× Red Dead 2, that makes Red Dead 2 roughly two-thirds the size of GTA 5 — while fan measurements have long put those two at about parity. Treat the ratios as Rockstar’s framing, not as surveyed acreage. Our full size comparison digs into that gap.

The wanted system was rebuilt from scratch

This is the biggest mechanical change shown, and the one that most changes how you actually play.

  • Six stars are back. GTA 5 capped at five.
  • Crime needs a witness. Police don’t magically know. An NPC has to see you, or an alarm has to trip.
  • Cops get a description. Your face, your clothes, your vehicle — whatever was actually observed gets passed around.
  • The HUD shows what they know. Hollow stars mean police are searching without a description; filled stars mean they have you pinned.
  • Disguises work, partially. Changing your hairstyle isn’t enough — you need a full outfit change. Wearing a mask on a job stops your face being logged in the first place.
  • Vice City is a trap. Three stars or higher in the city is brutal, because the streets are narrow and the traffic is dense. The open state is where you lose them.

There’s also a Criminal Profile system replacing Red Dead’s honor meter: clean, professional crime is rewarded; indiscriminate violence is penalised.

Stealing cars is an actual mechanic now

Not a hotwire minigame. GTA 6 makes vehicle theft a small system of its own:

  • You scan a target with the in-game WAINK app before taking it
  • Older cars go down to a slim jim
  • Luxury cars need key-cloning equipment you have to acquire first
  • Some vehicles carry GPS trackers that broadcast your position to police until you deal with them

Jason and Lucia, together and apart

The presentation is built around the pair. Confirmed from the footage and the previews around it:

  • Seamless character switching, including mid-action — one drives while the other shoots during a police chase
  • An optional romance between Jason and Lucia that carries no gameplay advantage; it’s characterisation, not a stat boost
  • Everyday-life beats: shopping, working out, exploring, riding along and just talking

Gunplay and melee both look substantially rebuilt — closer to a dedicated cover shooter than to GTA 5’s floaty aim. Our characters and story guide covers the wider cast.

The world outside the missions

Rockstar spent real screen time on things that aren’t crime:

  • Ryde Me — an in-world rideshare app for fast travel, with conversations that play out with your driver or fellow passenger over the trip
  • Snapmatic returns for photo mode — though you can’t post while you’re a wanted fugitive
  • Pool, mini golf, basketball, gym workouts, kayaking, diving, jet skis, parachuting, boating and a zoo

New locations named

Places appeared in the showcase that Rockstar had never named before:

  • Effluvia — a rooftop bar in Vice City used as a mission hub, where Jason and Lucia meet contacts
  • Megamundo HQ — the offices of an in-world satirical TV network, and the site of a combat sequence
  • Bayside — a fully built-out area with storefronts, beach access and a chunk of the activity list above
  • The swamps — wetland country shown with boating and snorkelling, consistent with what we already knew about Grassrivers

The showcase also revisited the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. The newly named places are now pinned on our interactive Leonida map, tagged to the Extended Look as their source and marked approximate — Rockstar showed the places, not their coordinates.

There are also full “leaked Leonida map” images circulating with county names and island names attached. We have not added any of those, because they are leaks, not reveals, and we only pin what Rockstar has actually shown.

No microtransactions. No generative AI.

Two answers that got as much attention as the gameplay. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, confirmed to press visiting the Edinburgh studio that:

  • The single-player game ships with no real-money purchases at launch
  • No generative AI was used in making the game

Read the first one precisely: it covers the single-player campaign launching November 19. It says nothing about how Rockstar plans to monetise a future GTA Online, which has not been detailed at all. The second refers to generative AI specifically — the traditional systems driving traffic, pedestrians and police are the same kind of AI the series has always used.

What it did not answer

  • No PC version. Not mentioned, not announced. Still PS5 and Xbox Series only.
  • No GTA Online details. Not a word.
  • No launch unlock times. Rockstar still hasn’t said what time the game goes live on November 19.
  • No official map. Rockstar hasn’t published the in-game map, so region borders remain unofficial.

What this does not change

GTA 6 still launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S, at $79.99 standard and $99.99 Ultimate. Preload begins November 12. Our countdown tracks every remaining date, and the release date guide covers the full delay history.

FAQ

Is the GTA 6 Extended Look the same as Trailer 3? Not officially. Rockstar never called it a trailer — the title is “An Extended Look,” and at 26:49 of mostly gameplay it’s a presentation, not a trailer. Most people call it Trailer 3 anyway.

How long is the GTA 6 Extended Look? 26 minutes and 49 seconds.

Where can I watch the GTA 6 Extended Look free? The official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website. The Netflix window was a six-hour head start on August 27 and is over.

Was the Extended Look real gameplay? Yes. Rockstar states it was captured entirely from in-game footage running on a PlayStation 5. It’s the first GTA 6 gameplay Rockstar has ever shown.

How long is GTA 6’s story? Around 80 hours, per Rob Nelson of Rockstar North — main story plus narrative-driven side content, on his own playthrough. Your mileage will vary.

Does GTA 6 have microtransactions? Not in single-player at launch, confirmed by Rockstar North. GTA Online’s monetisation has not been discussed.

Did the Extended Look announce a PC version? No. There is still no announced PC release.

Does GTA 6 run at 60fps? On a base PS5 it targets 30 fps. Rockstar has not detailed a performance mode or PS5 Pro / Series X specifics.
